Red-Roman is up and running. Hey we all have to start somewhere.
Question 220 sdi - What to look for?

Hi there

I am looking to sell my pride and joy (Peugeot 306 xsi 16V, slightly modifed ) and turn to the dark side.

Done a bit of home work and decided on a Rover 220 sdi (cheaper to buy than a Pug 306), looking to pay around £1000. I am hoping I should be able to get quite a good example for that money.

Car wise I think I know what I am looking for, but not having owned a diesel for over 10 years and not being very mechanically minded at the time. What do I need to look out for so I don't end up buying a dog?

Excellent website btw.

Have a look at the sticky at the top of the forum. That lists the common faults, although to be fair there aren't that many.
Also not included will be the wiring in the tailgate hinge which is a problem common to all 200/25/zr's.

Yeah, I did look at that thread, just wondered if there was anything else?

Do you get problems with head gaskets like the petrol models?

There arnt really any problems apart from the common things that have already been listed! The L-series engine is very well built and any problems with it are very noticable, the rest of the car is well built to so as long as everything looks good and doesnt knock or bang when being driven you should be on to a winner. You will find the 220 much better than the pug and if you get a standard one engine tuning is very easy and you get big power gains!

There are some about for the £1000 mark but most (not all) have either been badly looked after or are just looking tired on the paint and bodywork side. Saying that though about 3 weeks ago a mate of mine brought a minter for £650 as the old boy wanted a quick sale! So just goes to show unless you look hard you wont find just what your after!

Ive just started to re advertise my SDi for sale on ebay, she will be sadly missed i must say! its a bit out of your price range but if you see the listing I am prepared to do a deal!

Seen these ones, what do you think?

Heggie - Yours looks nice (wouldn't be interested in the wheels or lexus lights), might speak to you if yours is still available once I have sold mine.

Fair play the one with the alloys on a 1996 P plate looks like its been very well looked after and could be a bargin providing shes all clean and sound underneath! Just had a quick look on autotrader and theres nothing worth even looking at for atleast 55miles and even nationaly the 27 that came up only one caught my eye!

I think its also very heard to estimate the price of the 200 SDi as you can see that the range from £595 all the way upto £2995 on basically the same year! I have priced mine at £1750 or nearest offer for the simple reason shes a real eye catcher and I dont think I have ever had anyone say a bad comment about her!. I would expect about £1200 if she were in standard condition and I suspect I will sell her for around £1500 as she is but considering the money ive put into modding her its one hell of a loss im goignt to make!

But yeah if you were intrested in having the cosmetic mods returned to standard I will be very happy to make a deal with you!

Unfortunately, that is one of the pit falls of modding. It doesn't always increase the value of the car.

As a comparason, i have just bought a X plate R25 tdi with 77K on the clock for £1700. With MOT till june.

I just swapped the mods from my old R25, to the new one.

Cheers
Skelo

Thats half the problem if you look on autotrader theres a couple of 220s on t plates for just under 3 grand, whats so special about them the gear knob and steering wheel gold plated!!

I know mods dont always add value and in some cases can take it away hence the reason why im giving people the option! Personaly though I would pay a few hundred more for a modded car compared to standard!
