Need to replace the petrol tank in my GF's Rover 25 (AKA Geoff!). I've had a look, and its rusted along the seam at the back, so beyond the call of duty for repair paste.

However, there are two long threaded bolts that are suspended from the back of the car to hold the tank. They are "very" rusty. I have saturated them in WD40 - but even if I manage to undo them I would like to replace. so:

- are they welded to the cross member behind the tank, of are they in a sort of key-hole slot?
- My guess is that they are M8 - how hard would it be to buy a couple of lengths of M8 rod from B&Q and fabricate my own pair of hangers?

I've not done welding before (and not sure I want to start near the fuel system!) - so am wondering if this is one job best left to the garage, or if I can do it myself :)

I'm doing this on behalf of my mum who like me has limited knowledge of cars...(sigh oh no another woman)

My mum has a 52 plate rover 25 1.4 and has only had it a couple of weeks before it started playing up :irked:

On her way back from popping to the shops it started jolting forwards..which to be honest scared the living death out of her!
My dad took it for a lap round the block to just make sure she wasnt making it up(it repeeated its performance to him). While he was parked up outside he noticed that the revs would go up to 4 thousand.

We had the car plugged into a diagonstic machine and it came up with the idle air control valve, which has been replaced but it has not fixed the fault.

Any ideas?? Our so called mechanic isnt too interested in helping..:mad:

Many thanks

Stacey

The Rover 216 needs a coolant change tomorrow and I was wondering if there was a drain plug on the rad or if I would need to take a hose off to drain the old stuff ?

Also, it says in the manual to do a 50:50 measure of Coolant and Water, but I only have a 1 litre bottle of Unipart 2 Year Protection Winter & Summer coolant, would it be OK to use 1 litre coolant and fill the remaining 4 litres up with just water ? As the coolant is filthy and needs changed NOW! But we won't have any money to buy more coolant for weeks and the car just can't wait till then!

I know it maybe won't be perfect only having 1 litre of coolant in the system but surely 1 litre of clean coolant and 4 litres of clean water is better than a 50:50 measurement of filthy coolant and filthy water!?

You will also notice the shiny strap of metal holding the radiator from falling off, as there is now very little else to keep it in place. Some remedial work is needed I think. I'm inclined to chop it out and weld in a sturdy piece of box section. Or is this part still available? Open to any suggestions.

Just ordered an o2 sensor, and was going about ordering a water temp sensor. But I cant for the life of me figure out which one it is....

So on the alloy bit on right side of head, (near top nose pipe) theres two sensors! :( One when unplugged makes the rad fan spin up. This is black and has two pins.

The other is blue underneath, only has 1 pin, IIRC it when unplugged stopped the temp gauge working.

Searched the forum for hours coz its such a dumb question, but noone else has trouble deciding which one to change. LoL @ my stupidness
